THE OHIO STATE REFORMATORY, MANSFIELD, OHIO
100 Reformatory Rd, Mansfield, OH 44905
Construction on the Ohio State Reformatory, often referred to as “Mansfield,” began in 1886. The facility remained in operation until 1990, when a federal court ordered it to be closed. Since then, the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society has been working to restore the historic prison. Tours are offered and a number of events are held there. Many visitors are attracted because of the connection with “The Shawshank Redemption.” The popular 1994 movie was filmed there. Photo courtesy of Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society.
